Having kept up with each of Soulfly’s twelve records as they were released (legit still a fan of those first three badass albums), this evolution is pretty well paved out. It was on their third record where they brought in the double bass to take the band into heightened thrash territory, and while most of the records afterwards were reasonable attempts to elevate the band’s metal execution, some of the songwriting was just, well, bland. Listening to “Totem” this sounds like Hatebreed’s post “For The Lion’s” stuff. While not a revolutionary release, it’s still nice to see Max dishing out new music and continuing to work on his legacy standing as he tours endlessly in whatever capacity he deems suitable at the moment.
