Interestingly enough, I remember getting a copy of “Do We Speak A Dead Language” for a dollar off ebay back in the late 90’s because it was cheap and Ozzfest adjacent, before obtaining the band’s entire catalogue. I had no idea that bands like Downset, Earth Crisis, and Biohazard were considered “hardcore.” At the time hardcore and everything around it that was being pushed heavily honestly sounded like nu-metal. It contained groovy, palm-muted riffs, urban “hip/hopish” vocal delivery and some pretty standard song structures. But I thought it back then, and I still think it today, Downset are simply not good song writers.
