THE RECENTLY ADDED

Kruelty “Untopia”

At first I didn’t understand why Tokyo’s finest hardcore band was being marketed as death metal/black metal, but after multiple spins, I can safely say the band has officially placed a stake in the ground for a niche sub genre, that I respectfully address as dark hardcore. Black metal requires a certain element of folk and sorcery. Maybe face paint and cloaks, but they aren’t mandatory. Just spend a few hours at Hellfest’s Altar stage and you’ll know what I mean. And while death metal is often associated with flesh ripping covers and ghoul obsessed artist direction alongside bludgeoning lyrics, it also has a very distinct sound of eerie brutality. Kruelty are in a league of their own, operating on full throttle, delivering one of 2023’s finest releases so far.
