Drug Church, YES, Drug Church released my favorite album of 2024. If you’re slick enough to write an incredibly catchy song like “Myopic” and then follow it up with “Hey Listen,” a song about missing kids down on their luck that have candids displayed inside Wal Mart, and then wrap it up with the excellent “Peer Review,” which highlights our social associations as the primary composition of our personality traits, then you’ve chiseled a top spot in my recap. These themes are just too thought provoking and well written. The album came out at the beginning of fall, during a time where so much heaviness and sluggish execution was just running rampant, that Drug Church delivered the perfect antidote of angst and emotion and FUN that was sort of missing in the punk and hardcore space amidst all the downtrodden sentiment that seemed to plague 2024 parallel with downtempo and beatdown carving a permanent parking spot in alternative aggressive music. I didn’t see many folks highlight this album, or rate it high on any list, but if you missed the release sometime throughout the year, definitely make a point to sit with the tracks mentioned and read along to the lyrics. They’re arguably some of the year’s most captivating songs.
