From a band that's as prolific and animated as Of Montreal, Rune Husk is a completely flat and uninspiring listen that fails to elevate the band's game this many releases into their career. Of Montreal are the ultimate chameleon masterminds, knowing how to go to and from infinite sounds, with multiple band members on countless instruments and constantly challenging their live show to create a visual masterpiece. But the release feels like it only features half of the band, or perhaps it's just Barnes and a synthesizer (he even sounds exhausted with the songs), but the four tracks here could've been think tanks for a complete release. This one will be instantly overlooked inside a catalogue that's this lush and loaded with quality content, and while the release doesn't harm the band's legacy, it's just unfortunate that we'll have to wait for the band's next release to wonder if they got back on the wagon.
