One of the most unique records to splash into the doom scene in years, Nightmarer incorporate elements of sludge in their brutal death metal attack. While the majority of the record feels like one continuous delivery, each track delivers a powerful combination of silky guitar undertones, flared with intricate layers of subtlety overwhelmed by this powerful wall of sound that truly make for an artistic signature brush stroke on every song like an enormous canvas of expression. The endless pummeling of the double bass and blast beats pretty much dominate the entire release, and the guttural bellows never seem to let up. What’s interesting is just how neat the album feels, from the subtle opening to the closing polish of “Swansong,” it’s clear the band truly loves what they’ve accomplished here. This is easily a contender for one of the best records of the year.
