The legends of “real” black metal (not Deafheaven shoegaze with raspy vocals) step up to the plate to showcase why they ever put the makeup on in the first place. Just like Dimmu Borgir eventually made it ok for kids to listen to symphonic death metal, Immortal slowly seems to be producing their records to cross over into true metal fandom territory. The majority of this stuff is often produced so poorly that all artistic integrity is instantly overlooked and thrown out the window. Immortal says not anymore. Start here and then work your way back. This is their eleventh release and it definitely didn’t always sound so clear.
